Hello, I’m Alex – and in just a few weeks, I’ll be standing at the start line of the Brighton Marathon 2025, ready to take on 26.2 miles in support of Momentum Charity.
This will be my very first marathon. Until recently, the furthest I’d ever run was 5K (3.1 miles), so the idea of running over eight times that distance is, frankly, daunting. But this challenge is deeply personal—and a symbol of how far I’ve come.
Earlier this year, I had surgery. The next morning, I was told my lungs had partially collapsed, and I was in respiratory failure. My oxygen levels had plummeted. I spent days on oxygen, unable to breathe properly, and when I finally returned home, even walking to the end of the road felt impossible. For over two months, I couldn’t work or manage day-to-day life. It was a frightening, humbling experience.
But that’s where the journey began. One step at a time—literally—I fought to get back on my feet. I started with short walks. Then slow, hesitant jogs. My first proper run was barely a mile, but it felt like a marathon in itself. Every run since has been a milestone, and I’ve worked my way up to 5K. Now, with determination (and a fair bit of training!), I’m aiming to run 26.2 miles.
This marathon isn’t just about testing my limits—it’s about doing something meaningful for others. Having spent time in hospital, I can't begin to imagine the fear children must feel when facing serious illness. I’ve seen the devastating impact of cancer on adults, and to think of children fighting that same battle is truly heartbreaking.
That’s why I’m running for Momentum Charity.
Why Momentum?
Momentum supports families whose children are facing cancer or life-limiting conditions. They work hand in hand with hospitals across Surrey, Sussex and London to provide personalised, practical and emotional support—from counselling and creative therapies to family experiences and respite breaks.
Their work offers hope, comfort, and strength at a time when it’s needed most. And they rely on community donations to keep making that difference.
If my story resonates with you, I’d be incredibly grateful for your support—whether that’s through a donation or by sharing this page to help spread the word.
Thank you for helping me turn a personal recovery into something bigger. This marathon is more than a race—it’s a symbol of resilience, hope, and the power of community. Let’s do this together.
With gratitude,
Alex
